Victorian Country Fairsupported by Nantwich Town CouncilWe would like to welcome you to our lovely floral market town of Nantwich and to our inaugural Victorian Country Fair which takes place on Festival Sunday in the town centre. Relax in the ambiance of historic Nantwich and enjoy our special hospitality as we step back in time to the Victorian era.
| There is a variety of Victorian themed entertainments planned and there really is something for everyone to enjoy. There are many varied acts including a Town Crier, Brass Band, Singers, Puppets and mobile playlets in which our local Players engage you in conversation about some aspect of Victorian Nantwich. There are demonstrations by a Blacksmith, Thatcher, Stick Maker and other country craftsmen. Also look out for stilt walkers and jugglers (sponsored by Mornflake Oats), penny farthings and especially Victorian policemen - who may try and arrest you for a misdemeanour or two! A special area next to the Market Hall has been set aside for a Victorian Kitchen and there is a competition involving Victorian kitchen utensils. Competition answers here. Also in this area Englesea Brook Museum is setting up a Victorian Sunday School with costumes, "lessons" and games for the children. The Market Hall itself will also be open, with traders joining in the fun by dressing in Victorian costume. |
We are delighted to announce that for the first time St. Mary's Church is holding its Harvest Festival (at which all are welcome) to coincide with the Food Festival and the church is then open for viewing in all its Harvest glory. You may even come across a Victorian vicar as you admire the decorations. There will be animals and birds for the children including - an icon of the Victorian era - Shire horses - and Shetland ponies. There will be market stalls in the square decorated in Victorian style, with stall holders in Victorian dress.
Nantwich Museum is also opening specially for the Fair on Festival Sunday, and has lots of artefacts and information about Victorian Nantwich. Indeed their special exhibition features the canals of Nantwich, themselves reminiscent of Victorian times. The Museum is running historical walks throughout the festival. Come to the fair in Victorian dress and join in the fun, and play your part in re-creating Victorian Nantwich. Winner of the Victorian shop window competition was Hope House. |
