STARS of the Nantwich food and drink industry were recognised at a special awards ceremony on Sunday.

Owners of pubs, shops, restaurants and cafes flocked to a presentation evening after more than 1500 people cast their votes online in the Nantwich Food and Drink Awards. The former Dining Out Awards, run by Nantwich Food and Drink Festival committee, was extended for 2014 to include a new category for Food and Drink Retailers in Nantwich and surrounding area.

M&S Simply Food on Beam Street carried off the Best Food and Drink Retailer in Nantwich award while Cheerbrook Farm Shop on Newcastle Road won the category for retailer in the Nantwich area.

Rookery Hall scooped top Hotel Restaurant for the fourth year and the White Lion at Hankelow was named best Pub with Food.

Romazzino Italian eatery on Love Lane in Nantwich won the Restaurant category and Harrisons on High Street took honours as best Café/Coffee Shop.

Roger Mills, a festival director, said: “The awards salute the establishments which help to create a positive vibe about Nantwich.

“They showcase our beautiful town and support the local economy by drawing visitors from a wide area. These are the aims of the festival also. September’s event was the biggest and best yet with over 40,000 visitors. The festival committee has come a long way since we took over five years ago and moved the event from Mill Island into the town centre. Then we had 40 exhibitors in the Civic Hall. This year there were 180 spread across town. Now the festival committee and its marvellous band of volunteers are planning for 2015.”

The awards evening drew more than 130 people to Residence Bar and Restaurant in Nantwich.

Prizes were presented by festival friends and sponsors including Mornflake, Cheshire High Sheriff Susan Sellers and the Rector of Nantwich Barry Wilson. Support also came from Pure PR, Rodney Densem Wines and the Chronicle as media partner.
